GLASS PAINTING

Introduction:

Glass painting is a contemporary art which has been derived from the age old art of stained glass painting which involves putting smaller coloured pieces of glass together. It was a common feature in high windows and doors etc. in the olden times and can still be seen in churches and old buildings. These days glass painting is becoming a popular feature and catching up as a hobby due to its awesome results and easy availability of glass painting equipment. Many companies launch glass painting ideas for hobbies. They can have different levels like beginners, which is basically for experimental purpose for children. At home (as a hobby), glass paintings can be as wall hangings, wine glasses painting, on windows, acrylic sheets, cups, mugs, tiles, mirrors etc.


Glass Painting is an art form consisting of applying paint to a piece of glass and then viewing the image by turning the glass over and looking through the glass at the image.

Churches were first to implement the glass paintings over the huge glass windows with the illustrations of Christ and depictions of Bible characters. The narration of the Christ life and his teachings were painted on glass brilliantly. The paint stained glasses of church were adored and enjoyed by people. People started getting stained glass art into their homes with various designs which embellished the presence of home. Later on the idea grew of implementing it on utensils, windows and on various things.

In India, glass painting reflected symbolic and cultural attributes. Mythological figures and women in traditional clothes were depicted more in Indian glass painting. At the time of twentieth century the world demanded for more exploration and variety of artistic expressions using glass. It is no longer only a hobby to paint but also it has emerged in various techniques for decorating the house and office with the help of new technology. Subjects like Architecture, Design and Art enormously use glass painting.


Glass Painting on OHP Sheet:

Glass is a wonderful canvas to paint upon. This form of art requires immense interest and determination. Glass is sometimes replaced by OHP sheet in order to reduce the weight of the work. OHP sheet is Transparent like a glass and serves justice in replacing the glass by this material. OHP sheet is lighter, easier to work with and tension free of any damage or breakage.

Making Process:

Step 1: Secure the design and OHP sheet on an examination pad. A standard A4 size will be available in all stationery stores. If you are confident you can straight away do in glass itself.

Step 2: Choose a design you can either get a glass painting design book or download designs from internet. You will get loads of designs in the internet. Outline the design on OHP sheet with the Glass liner. Slowly squeeze from the top of the Liner tube.

Step 3: Allow it to dry for 10 to 15 mins.

Step 4: Fill the design with Glass colours. While pouring the colours avoid air bubbles. If suppose you got bubbles break them with a needle or use ear buds to break them.

Step 5: Once the design is completed allow it to dry for 30 to 40 mins.

Step 6: You can place crushed silver foil (optional) behind the painting as background while framing it.

· Develop a working concept of what it means to be an artist and create paintings.

· Reinforcing the principles of traditional painting skills.

· Developing new ways of thinking, seeing, and creating.

· Building confidence through exercises that helps students explore different types of painting techniques.
